[Act 1]

（反乱の火付け役となったメージャー爺さんの台詞)

Maj:

I have had a long life, I have had much time for thought and I think I may say that I understand the nature of life on this earth as well as any animal now living.

わたしはもうじき死ぬ。

自分の知恵を皆に話しておきたい。

We are born, we are given just so much food as will keep the breath in our bodies.

食って、生きるだけで精一杯だ。

It is summed up in a single word - Man.

Man is the only real enemy we have.

Man is the only creature that consumes without producing.

人間とは労せず、消費のみする輩だ。

It is all lies.

Man serves the interests of no creature except himself.

And among us animals let there be perfect unity, perfect comradeship in the struggle.

All animals are comrades.

全て欺瞞だ。

奴らは自分以外への利益には無関心だ。

動物たちよ団結せよ。

闘争なのだ。

Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy.

Whatever goes upon four legs or has wings is a friend.

And remember also that in fighting against Man, we must not come to resemble him.

二本脚は全て敵だ。

四本脚、翼をもつ者は味方だ。

人間との闘う時に彼奴らの真似などするな。

（懐疑的なベンジャミンと死後の安楽の世界を信じるモーゼ)

Ben:

Moses, the raven, was Mr Jones special pet.

黒ガラスのモーゼズはジョーンズのお気にいりだ。

He claimed to know of the existence of a mysterious country called…….

不思議な山について知っていると言っている…

Mos:

Sugarcandy Mountain!

氷砂糖山だ！

Oh, Sugarcandy Mountain, brethren.

皆、あの不思議な所だ、

That wondrous land to which all good animals go

全ての善良な動物たちが、

When they depart this vale of tears.

この涙の谷を去ってから行くところ

It lies way up there in the sky,

空の彼方、雲の上のどこかにある、

Dearly beloved,

憧れの世界なのさ。

A little distance beyond the clouds.

Ben:

There is no such place!

そんな所などあるものか、ウソッパチだ。

“英国のけだものよ…”

（革命は画一性を暗に強制する）

Mol:

And shall I still be allowed to wear ribbons?

で、リボンをつけてもいい？

Sno:

Comrade, those ribbons that you are devoted to are the badge of slavery.

Can you not understand that liberty is worth more than ribbons?

同志よ、お前の好きなリボンなんて奴隷の印だよ。

自由こそリボンより価値ありと、分らないのか？

（スクイーラーが動物たちを懐柔していく）

Squ:

Do you know what would happen if we pigs failed in our duty?

Jones would come back!

Surely, comrades - surely there is no one among you who would want Jones to come back?

俺たちの仕事が失敗したらどうなるか分かるかい。

聞くけどさ、あのジョーンズなんかに、舞い戻ってきて欲しいなんて誰も思わないな。

（スノーボールの懐柔策）

Sno:

Comrades, since some of you have had difficulty in learning to read and write, we have decided to reduce the Commandments of Animalism to a single easily remembered maxim - FOUR LEGS GOOD, TWO LEGS BAD

同志、読み書きが大変らしいので、動物主義戒律を簡潔にした。

四本脚は良い、二本脚は悪い。

Sno:

Let us rid ourselves of the chains of sordid labour.

Electricity can do that for us.

Just picture our lives when the wonders of science have freed us from out daily toil.

雑な労働など忘れることだ。

電力で全て解決だ。

科学が労働から解放してくれる。

Sno:

Let us move forward, comrades, to an age of true freedom.

Let us forge the future of Animal Farm in the white heat of technology!

真の自由へと前進だ。

同志、動物農場の未来は白熱したテクノロジーなのだ。

（ナポレオンの懐柔策、追従するスクイーラー、純真に信奉するボクサー）

Nap:

Comrades, comrades - let us not argue.

Let us vote on the matter, and abide by the decision of the majority.

同志、議論は止め、投票できめるのだ。

水車など馬鹿げている。

多数決で決まる。

Nap:

In future, all questions relating to the working of the farm will be settled by a special committee of pigs presided over by myself.

今後は農場の仕事については私が統括で、豚の特別委員会が全てを決める。

Nap:

The meetings will be held in private, and you will assemble once a week to be given your orders, but there will be no more debates.

会は私的で、一週一度、皆の意見をまとめる。

議論は無しだ。

Squ:

He would be only too happy to let you make your decisions for yourselves.

But sometimes you might make the wrong decision, comrades, and then where should we be?

皆が自分たちで決心するのが一番だと彼は信じている。

が、もし間違った決心をしたらどうなるのだ？

Box:

If the holding of meetings means that Jones will come back, then there must be no more meetings.

Comrade Napoleon says it, so it must be right.

集会がジョーンズ再来なら、ごめんだ。

ナポレオンがそう言うなら、正しいのだ。

（スクイーラーが戦術を説く、皮肉屋のベンジャミン、革命に疑問を持ち始める動物たち）

Squ:

Ah, that was Comrade Napoleon’s cunning.

He appeared to oppose the windmill, only to get rid of Snowball, who was a dangerous character and a bad influence.

ナポレオンの計略さ。

水車建設に反対するとみせかけ、スノーボールを追い出した。危険な奴で悪影響をあたえるからだ。

Squ:

Now that Snowball is out of the way, we can get on with the job.

That, comrades, is what is known as tactics.

Tactics, comrades, tactics.

スノーボールが居なくなったから仕事にとりかかれる。

戦術だ、これが肝心。

Box:

I don’t know about that Benjamin, stop being so miserable.

そんなに文句言うなよ。

ジョーンズが去って、清々したろう。

Ben:

I don’t see anything to laugh at.

Donkeys live a long time.

None of you has ever seen a dead donkey.

笑い事じゃあない。

ロバは長生きする。

死んだロバを見たことは無いかい？

God gave me a tail to keep the flies off, but, I’d sooner have no tail and no flies…

神様は蠅を追っ払う為に尻尾をくれたが、願わくば、尻尾も蠅も無しがいい。

Clo:

Yes, of course I believe in the Revolution, and the work that Napoleon is doing as much as you do.

革命やナポレオンのことも信じてる。

だが、爺さんの言ったことは実現しないみたいだ。

Clo:

It’s just that sometimes things don’t seem to happen the way that Major said they would.

メージャー爺さんが言った反乱とはこんなはずじゃなかった。

Clo:

What has happened to us?

どうしたんだ。

誰も信頼できない。

Clo:

We have come to a time when no-one speaks his mind; when fierce, growling dogs roam everywhere, where you have to watch your comrades torn to pieces after confessing to shocking crimes….

残忍な犬共が徘徊し、恐ろしい犯罪の告白の後で八つ裂きにされる同志たちは見殺しにされ。

Clo:

Oh, things are far better off than in Jones’s day, and we must keep him from coming back… but still, it was not for this that we have hoped and toiled.

ジョーンズの頃より今はずっといいし、奴が戻らない様にしなければ。

でもこんなはずじゃあなかった。

Mur:

‘No animal shall kill any other animal…. Without cause…, - Without cause?

いかなる動物も他の動物を…　理由なく… 理由 無く　だって？

Mur:

But clearly they saw that the commandment had not been broken, for clearly there was good “cause” for killing the traitors.

戒律は破られてはいなかったのだ。

何故なら“裏切り者”を殺すのは当然のことだったから。

[Act 2]

（権力者ナポレオンの欺瞞とその追従者たちの言）

Nap:

I was there during his last hours, and I can honestly say it was one of the most affecting sights I have ever seen.

最後の時に俺は立ち会った、実に胸打たれる瞬間だった。

か細い声で俺の耳に囁いた。

‘Forward comrades,’ he whispered ‘forward in the name of the Revolution. Long live Comrade Napoleon. Napoleon is always right’.

“進め、”と彼は囁いた、“進め革命の名に恥じないように。同志ナポレオンが栄えますように、ナポレオンはいつも正しい、”これが今わの際の言葉だった。

Sqe:

Ideas which every animal would do well to adopt as his own, comrades.

この言葉をそれぞれの胸に刻むことだ、同志よ。

Clo:

Yes, and he fed us and looked after us.

And then came that historic day when Jones was expelled from the farm and we began to rule our own lives.

そうだ、彼は餌をくれ、めんどうをみてくれた。

そしてあの歴史的な日、ジョーンズは農場から追い出され、我らは自立の道を歩み始めた。

（月日が流れ革命のことは忘れられた日々。生き残った動物たちはそれぞれの視点から"革命“を省みる。）

YAn:

Was it exciting?

それは面白いこと？

Clo:

Oh yes, very exciting.

I can remember the thrill when we realized we were in charge.

うん、とても面白い。

自分たちが責任をとると知ったときの興奮を思い出す。

Ben:

I can remember everything about my life, and I know that things are never much better or much worse.

これまでの人生がどんなだったか全部思い出せる。

だが、今が最善だとか、最悪だなんてことはないさ。

Ben:

Let’s face it, hunger, hardship and disappointment are our lot.

困難や失望が人生には当たり前のことだ。

Clo:

But we mustn’t give up hope.

It is, after all, an honour and a privilege to be members of Animal Farm,

でも希望を捨ててはいけない。

動物農場のメンバーだってことは名誉ある特権なんだ。

Clo:

still the only farm in the whole country to be owned and operated by animals.

動物農場は、動物だけで運営している唯一つのものなんだ。

Clo:

The golden future which old major promised us and which we used to sing about is still coming.

メージャー爺さんの言った輝かしい未来、皆で歌ったあの未来はきっと来る。

Clo:

It may not happen in our lifetime, but it will happen.

皆が生きている間には実現しないかもしれないが、きっとそうなる。

We feed ourselves, we work for ourselves, we serve no man.

All animals are equal!

自分の食物は自分で作り、働くのは自分のため、誰にも支配されない。

全ての動物は平等だ。

（最高権力者ナポレオンが人間共と友好関係を結ぶ。権力豚たちが人間に酷似してきた）

Nap:

I hope very much that this meeting will mark the start of friendly relations between ourselves.

この集いが我々の友好親善への船出となることを望む者です。

There is no earthly reason why there should be any clash of interest between pigs and human beings.

豚と人間とが利益関係の衝突などあってはならない事です。

The name Animal Farm has been abolished, henceforth our farm shall be known by its correct and original name Manor farm.

動物農場という名前は廃止され、今後我々の農場はその名を正統で元の名、荘園農場とします。

Sto:

The animals looked from pig to man, and from man to pig and from pig to man again.

But it was already impossible to tell which was which.

動物たちは豚から人間、また人間から豚へと目を移した。

しかし、どちらがどちらか、見分けがつかなかった。
