International Theatre Company London's
28th Japan Tour
“The Lunatic, the Lover, and the Poet,
Are of imagination all compact.” (V.i.7-8)
Produced by Ashley Associates, Ltd.
Supported by British Council, ALC Press Inc., and Shakespeare Company
Directed by Paul Stebbings
Original music composed by Paul Flush
“Tragedy with a Smile on its Lips” (Meyerhold)
Company principles:
The company believes theatre should be truly theatrical, We reject television inspired realism and Hollywood simplifications. Theatre
should challenge the audience to participate rather than observe.Theatre should
stimulate the imagination of the audience. Theatre should be a fusion of the
arts: visual, physical and musical as well as merely textual.
To this end the company always commissions a
musical score for each production and usually works with a choreographer as
well as director. Performers are recruited for their ability to cross the
boundaries of the performing arts. Rehearsals are collaborative rather than
dictatorial, and we strive to create an ensemble that feels responsible for
more than just their own performance. Our motto is borrowed from the great
Russian theatre director Meyerhold (murdered by Stalin),
who challenged the boundaries of theatre and teaches us to mix popular and
innovative styles.
