“Togetherness through Theater”

Theater is a social art, crossing barriers and bringing people together in the process of its creation. Through theater we are offered an alternative to the isolation so often a part of our increasingly fractured, technological world.

I have been promoting the Japan tours of the Internal Theatre Company London (ITCL) since its first visit in 1992. Since that time, the group has been staging performances in Japan twice a year. ITCL's artistic director, Paul Stebbings, began his training with the great Polish director Jerzy Grotowski, who championed what he called “poor theater,” where the only resources on stage are the actors' own bodies and voices.

Grotowski spoke of theater “unblocking” the audience, breaking down the barriers that separate us from our deepest feelings and moral values. In his work, Paul develops and explores the ideas of the great popular theatrical masters, such as Grotowski, Peter Brook,

Brecht, and Meyerhold.  More information is available from http://www.adg-europe.com.

Less Is More

The essence of ITCL is that “less is more.” Our productions are defined by the actors' rapid transition from one role to another, simple stage sets that stimulate the audience's imagination, live a cappella and instrumental musical performances by the actors, and unique choreography expressing a work's core themes. These elements come together to elegantly realize the possibilities inherent in the source material, often surprising even those who are familiar with the text.

Paul's production of Macbeth in 2001 was received favorably by Shakespeare fans worldwide, and his rendition of Hamlet won the top prize from the International Theater Festival in Tehran in 2004. The first six months of 2008 have seen his productions staged in over twenty countries across three continents, including such diverse cities as Beijing, Guatemala, Oslo, Tokyo, London, and Berlin. The Hamlet tour of Japan this spring extended over 3 weeks, playing in 11 universities and 4 public halls, and reached a combined audience of over 12,000 people.
